Before July 1, 2024, the sale of dry herb vaporisers existed in a grey area, allowing unregulated products to enter the Australian market. Some vaporisers intended for medical cannabis use were not subject to safety standards, and many were imported from overseas suppliers without approval from Australian health authorities.
- The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has now set strict guidelines to:
- Ensure consumer safety by allowing only high-quality, medically approved vaporisers.
- Regulate the sale of vaporisers through pharmacies and licensed suppliers.
- Prevent misuse by restricting vaporiser sales to individuals with a valid medical cannabis prescription.
- Stop unregulated imports that do not meet Australian health standards.
From July 1, 2024, purchasing a vaporiser without following TGA regulations may result in penalties, confiscation of the product, or difficulty obtaining cannabis prescriptions.
